Country singer Aaron Kelly of Sonestown shocked the judges when he rocked the stage Tuesday night during “American Idol’s” Rolling Stones week.
His version of “Angie” was, according to judge Ellen DeGeneres, one of two performances that stood out in the fourth week of the competition.
“Beautiful, beautiful,” she said.
Simon Cowell told the 16-year-old that he feared for him when he heard the theme for the week was the Rolling Stones.
“I thought you and Rollings Stones? This is going to be an absolute disaster.”
But, the judge continued, it was the song choice that helped Kelly succeed.
“What you did cleverly was that you sang the song within the limits of your vocals this time,” Cowell said.
According to Kelly, although it was difficult in the beginning to get settled with the song, he found his place.
The judges agreed that it was the connection with “Angie” that also will help see him through.
“When you connect with the feeling of the song and you find that place where it’s coming from you, it is very powerful and that’s what you did tonight,” Kara DioGuardi said.
America agreed with the judges and voted Kelly through to the next round. He will perform songs along with 10 other contestants at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Eliminations will take place at 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Lacey Brown was eliminated last night.
